Information
The flat 8-cylinder Porsche engine with horizontal cooling fan was finally ready at the start of the 1962 F1 season. Also new was the six-speed synchronized transmission. The engine power reached 180 horsepower, but not enough to worry the best V8s. The new 804 of Formula 1 had a very low-profile chassis, which improved aerodynamic efficiency. The 804 was used by Dan Gurney and Joakim Bonnier. Gurney won the French GP and the Solitude GP (not valid for the world championship) while Bonnier obtained as best results a second place at the GP Solitude and a sixth place in Monza. However, it was evident that the 804 was not up to par with the competition in F1 and Porsche decided, in the spring of 1963, to retire from the category to devote itself exclusively to endurance races.
Diecast construction.
